    Aria

    Aria is located just three kilometers from the city of Nafplio on the Nafplio-Epidaurus road. The town is built at the foot of a hill, which is a continuation of the hill of Palamidi, at an altitude of 27 meters above sea level. The village of Aria has been incorporeated in the municipality of Nafplio since 1994.
    The area seems to have been inhabited since ancient times, as the discovery of Mycenaean tombs near the spring of Aria, the ancient Greek temple on the ruins of which the Holy Monastery of Aria (Agia Moni) was built, the spring of Aria that many identify as the ancient spring of Kanathos, in which the goddess Hera bathed every year and gained back her virginity, as well as the Roman aqueduct that supplied water to the city of Nafplio.

    Aria Spring (Zoodochos Pigi)

    The ancient spring is located outside of the 'Agia Moni' monastery's courtyard and is famous for its water. Some relate this spring with the "Kanathos" spring, an ancient spring mentioned by the explorer Pausanias in the 2nd century A.D. According to the myth, Hera came to this spring every year to renew her virginity.

    Agia Moni is located in the suburb of Aria, 3 km northeast of Nafplio. The monastery dates back to the middle of the 12th century and since 1875 it has been dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (Lifegiving Spring). It is one of the most important temples of the middle Byzantine period and it has been maintained in excellent condition. The church was a gift by the bishop of Argos and Nafplio Leontas, who built it in the year 1149.

    Aria History

    Sp. Dyovounitis was initiated in to the Friendly Society and with the beginning of the Revolution he raised the flag in Mendenitsa on April 8, 1821 together with Athanasios Diakos. With his wit and with the help of Komnas Trakas. He fought non-stop, taking part in all the battles, inside and outside the borders of Roumeli (central Greece), without ever getting involved in politics. See the monument dedicated to him in Aria.
    In the summer of 1686 Morosini bypassed other fortresses and brought a fleet and army to Tolo. He advances his forces from the road that connects Agia Sotira with Agia Moni and occupies the (still unfortified) Palamidi. He carries cannons there and starts bombing the city.
    The Turks were camping in Merbaka. They were superior to the Venetians because they had cavalry. But Kainixmark finds a way to neutralize his opponent's advantage. The Turks attacked and occupied the hill of Areia. Kainixmark gathered his infantry on the slope from the olive grove of Agia Moni to Agia Paraskevi. The hill and fusillade of the infantry led to the destruction of the Turks. They lost 1500 soldiers. The Turks left Aria, went to reorganize in Merbaka and counting their losses they considered it good to retreat to Corinth. The Turks of Nafplio surrendered the city, the Ottoman inhabitants were transferred with all their belongings to the Asian coast opposite Tenedos and the Greeks, led by the Metropolitan, preceded Morosini as a liberator.
